What is Oral Sedation?
Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. Oral sedation is one of the available methods of conscious sedation dentistry, along with inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide) and conscious intravenous sedation. Drugs which can be used for sedation include triazolam and lorazepam.
How does oral conscious sedation work?
It’s sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” although that’s not entirely accurate. Patients are usually awake with the exception of those who are under general anesthesia. There will be a recovery period of 20 – 30 minutes before you are discharged into the care of your escort. The sedative effect of the drugs will gradually wear off during the course of the day. Most patients are well enough to return to their normal activities within 24 hours depending on the nature of their work.
